Meet Yoshi. She's our 6.5 year old domestic short hair (black) cat. Yoshi was born in 1999 in Las Vegas. She followed a little girl home to her apartment when she was a baby, but the little girl's mom wouldn't take her in. Luckily, Ellen lived next store and was able provide a home for Yoshi. Yoshi's best pal was the family dog, a pit bull. Ellen then had to move to Madison, WI and she took Yoshi with her. Unfortunately, the pit bull couldn't make the move.
In Madison, Ellen continued to take in cats until there were 5 other cats in the house! Gradually Yoshi became detached from the family, and spent more and more time alone. She was a bully at the food & water dishes. Ellen thought it would be best for Yoshi to find a home where she was the only kitty - that's where she was most happy. So around Halloween, Ellen gathered Yoshi's things and tried to take her to the Humane Society. But she couldn't go through with it. Three months later (and now Ellen was also about 6-7 months pregnant), she knew Yoshi wasn't happy and couldn't stand to see her that away anymore. She took her to the Humane Society - and decorated her cage with a flyer which described all of the things Yoshi enjoyed: bird watching on the window sill, dancing, whistling, going for walks on a leash, pit bulls... Too cute.
In early January 2003, I decided that I wanted something to come home to at night. I just moved into a new house, and was working long hours at work. But I didn't want to turn into one of those "cat ladies", thinking it was hard enough to find a boyfriend. After many months of bad dates, I re-prioritized things. On my first trip to the Humane Society I didn't see any cats that I bonded with. One month later on Feb 8 I met Yoshi. She was perfect - sitting quietly in her cage with her large yellow/green eyes and big perky ears. We took her out and she jumped right onto my lap. I learned about her history from the file Ellen left with the counselors. I told the Humane Society counselor that I wanted to adopt her. It wasn't until the next day, February 9th, I was able to take her home.
She is the most gorgeous, loving creature ever. Funny enough, two weeks later I met my Michael. Even though she's a black cat, I can say that she's been my lucky charm from the start.
We have never had a cat or a dog. I tried to get a dog once. I took my boys (they were little then) to the dog pound and asked for a puppy. The dog pound lady took a look at all my kids and said "Not for you!"
She told me that I couldn't possibly care for little kids and a puppy at the same time. We left empty handed.
Perhaps we should have tried for a cat. Maybe I could have gotten some good luck too. Oh well. We have fish now. It works.
Despite the fact that I occasionally try to sell mine on the internet I love my cats. I wouldn't trade them for the world.
Now if they would just understand that there is going to be a really big non-furry cat coming to live in our house things would be good.
