My First Adoption Paperwork List & Childcare Questions
1. One page childhood summaries

I'm done; deadline is Monday-Tuesday for M. I'm with Lauren on this one. M is totally excited about the adoption, but leaves things until the last minute sometimes.

2. Financial statement

This one I delegated to M as well. Deadline is Monday-Tuesday.

3. Reason for adoption statement

That's mine. I will work on this today.

4. List of 4 references, non-family members, who have known us at least four years.

We have identified our prime candidates; and need to contact them and let them know that we would like their support.

5. Pictures of us

Done and forwarded to T*rget for printing. I'll pick these up over the weekend.

Today Michael and I checked out our nearby, accrediated (I love everything that's accrediated!) pre-school program. We are a little bit disappointed by the size and cleanliness/upkeep of the place, but the program seems educationally sound and they have experience with children who were adopted from Russia. I have requested information from a few other schools in the area, and will continue looking.

I'm trying to figure out what we'll do once they are home. I may continue to work (if possible) part-time to help pay the bills especially since my company provides good health care insurance. M's work is all commission based so our income can flucuate quite a bit. Since M works from home we also have some flexibility with childcare. Even if I decide to stay home, we both agree that it will be important to get the girls into preschool part-time to help with their English and socialization skills.

At the school we attended today, the full day rate per month is $828 per child. Half days (8:30AM-12:00PM) is $587 per child. Does this sound reasonable to you?

Those costs are about what we found when researching preschool too. After all was said and done, with me working full time and both kids in preschool, I would have $30 per month left over of my salary. So, we decided it was better for me to stay home with the kids (aged 3 and 5). After 7 months, I can say it was definitely worth it. They both have acquired a huge amount of English (my daughter just tested as an "intermediate speaker" for school), and they were able to settle in a bit. However, while they had a lot of socialization with other kids in the orphanage, I'm sure they still could have benefitted from the type of socilaization they would receive in preschool. Not to mention the skills they would get for kindergarten. As an elementary school teacher, I was able to work with them a bit, but it is still not the same. I guess I'll see if keeping them home paid off once my daughter starts school in a few weeks!

As for the dossier paperwork, I feel for you! It is definitely tedious, making sure all the i's are dotted and the t's crossed. So starts your "paper pregnancy!" Best of luck on your journey!

I was so happy to see your list this morning. So excited that you are able to start the process finally. Can't wait to watch your journey.

The preschool seems a bit high to me but I live in Texas and things are different here. Some of the ladies at work pay probably close to what your half day rate is for theirs.

But you have a little bit of time to weigh your options. I'm sure you'll find the right place. That's neat that they have had chlidren from Russia before.

You are going to get me introuble, LOL! I must say with all of my whining I am not being fair. IF it wasn't for Marco being so cooperative I guess we wouldn't ahve finished our dossier and HS, and have the I 171h in our hands. I must applaud him for being cooperative too.

So happy to read you are moving forward. I think I have been reading your blog for about 4 months so it is so exciting to watch the birth of your process!!!!

I say that it is high but it may just be the cost of living in your area. I spend around 750$ for three kids to go to a sitter's and my kids attend preschool via the school system on the side, which is paid for by the district since they had some development delays.

Good luck with the paperwork how exciting!

Woo Hoo, I'm so excited that you have been able to begin! We did the same thing, delegated the different forms and of course hubby was always right up to the last minute getting them ready.

Welcome aboard. The loony bin bed delegate officially inducts you. Did you bring your chocolate and vodka? If not get the hell out. There's no room under here for the likes of you. (just kidding)

I couldn't comment on the preschool price. We picked our preschool (don't know the cost yet), but have to still wait 2 years to enroll Pickle because of where his birthday falls. That's ok with me.

I pay $570/month for a 3 year old, who goes 4 days a week. I know it is different depending on where you live.
