Let's Decide Based on Size
We continue to discuss our referral preferences, typically trying to decide what age(s) we would be happy with. Our preference with our agency is listed as 3-6 years old, and ideally we would like two girls - 4 and 5 or 5 and 6 or 4 and 6 (or twins of the same age). We've stuck three in there as a minimum to expand our options. I've also been toying with increasing our limit to seven... but I really don't know what seven looks like. Besides the lovely Katya.

So wherever we go, and I see a child which fits "the look" - in terms of age - we have a debate about what age they might be. Of course I should just ask, but that wouldn't make the game fun, right? Knowing me, I'm probably pointing out 10 year olds and thinking that they are six.

Maybe tomorrow I'll tell you about our referral experience which happened yesterday. Very exciting and emotionally draining yet in the end resulted in a re-assessment of how we see our family coming together.

Speaking of size, I was in Dallas TX this week for work. Just overnight, for about 26 hours. Wish I was there longer to meet up with a special friend and maybe meet some Texas bloggers!

In our case, 7 looks like all of 41# and about 47 inches. Sometimes she acts mature beyond her years, and sometimes as bratty as two! ;> But she is lovely...thanks for the compliment.

It's a tough decision to wrestle with. We had asked for 6-8, and I had in my mind 8. When we were referred Katya, she was six, so that threw the picture I had in my mind for a loop. Obviously, I'm glad we went for it.

If your gut is telling you 3-6, then that's what you should go with! That's just my opinion, of course. I think our intuition comes from somewhere deep inside and we shouldn't count it out. I know a lot of waiting parents will want to slap me for saying this, but I honestly don't really understand why agencies give you a referral outside your criteria. I mean, you submitted your age range for a reason. Why give you a referral outside it, just so you have to painfully debate about it?! I know we will wait longer if necessary to be referred a child that will fit our family. I guess I might have to make that clear up front with our agency.

ps - Frank and I always play the guessing game with kids, too. Just for fun. I'm terrible at it.

I agree with Christen, go with your gut. And then stand firm in what you decided. (Easy for me to say I'm not there yet)
A referral experience. I can't wait to hear. I do hope that you are recovering from it though as it sounds like it wasn't good.

You were in my area. Too bad you weren't hear longer could have had a big get together.

Our age range was below 2 and our referral turned two right before our visit and when she became part of our family she was 26 months. The joy of my life and I wouldn't have had it any other way! So go with what you feel and if the person is right for you. It is hard to say a set age! SOmetime you just have to go and see the personality! There are so many factors! Good luck.
