Tomorrow is the big day! I'll try to post an update tomorrow about Rita's surgery. We have to be at the hospital by 7:30AM, and things start two hours later. We'll go home later in the day.
To be honest, I'm a bit of an emotional wreck right now. Besides the stress and anxiety of tomorrow, we learned today that Thani's heartworm test came back positive. They want to start treating him on Sunday. Normally they would perform a re-test to rule out a false positive but Thani had a positive test last Fall (conveniently timed during our referral mix-up...I never blogged about this) but was re-tested then and it was negative.
What this means... they will perform some bloodwork and take a chest xray to make sure he is healthy enough for the procedure. He will receive the first dose and stay overnight at the vet. Then he has to rest for 4 (or more?) weeks while the worms are detaching from his heart to prevent blockage of his arteries. He'll then need two more overnight treatments before he is considered "cured".
We aren't sure how he got infected - he does take his preventative medicine monthly so this could either be a drug failure, or something he had before we adopted him.

I am thinking about you today and the surgery. I would be a bit of a wreck also but it sounds like everything will go smoothly and be just fine. Good luck with everything.
