We've had alot of firsts this week. I think her favorite meal of the week was Tuesday lunch when we had Spaghettios. I got lots of "yummy yummys" (rubbing her stomach), "I love macaroni" (in Russian), and many thumbs ups during the meal. Over the last month we have also tested out many of American favorites like macaroni & cheese, hot dogs, bologna sandwiches and pizza and she loves them all. The only thing she didn't like on first try is peanut butter. Last Sunday when Z came over, Rita promoted me to "Super Chef" and I received fours stars for my cooking.

We continue to practice on the bike - practicing figure 8s so she learns how to turn. Rita told Z that she learned how to ride a bike last year - not sure if this was at the orphanage or during the summer when she lived in the home of one of the caregivers. We also tried rollerskating... that was more difficult for her. Perhaps it was the safety helmet, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards that I made her wear???

We also decided that we wanted to explore her interest and abilities with tennis. So last Sunday we went to our local mega sport store and purchased a junior Maria Sharap*va racket for her. And we've been playing (hitting the ball to each other - not even back and forth) every day since. She also really enjoys watching the tennis channel. So we are planning to enroll her in a tennis summer day camp organized by the YMCA for 2-4 weeks*.

Rita's eye surgery is scheduled for March 27th.... And we are still working on a start date for school. The elementary school which is walking distance to our house requires us to complete a transfer from our assigned school (about a mile away). Before we left for Russia we checked in with our preferred school (the closer one) and they said that there would be no problem getting her enrolled anytime we were ready. But now there is a problem (overcrowding) and we will probably be attending her assigned school this year, and probably next year (although we are on the waiting list). It's not a big deal, as the assigned school is also really really good (better I think on paper) but we will need to drive her unless we want to walk her along a busy road ... and it would take about 60 minutes of walking to get there and back. The other drawback we see is that some of the kids in our neigborhood go to our preferred school; whereas the other half go the assigned school. Friends at her assigned school will live farther away. It just might make after-school get-togethers alittle bit more complicated but we will survive.

Another first today happened at the local playground. There were five or six children about the same age playing on the large climbing equipment. They were chasing each other trying to get to the top of the slide, and then they would all go down the tall spiral slide together. There was one boy who kept trying to race Rita or would wait for her to get off of the slide so they could run together. At one point, he yelled to her "you can't beat me" (to get to the top of the slide) and she totally blew by him, laughing and running/crawling up to the next level. He continued to chase after her. Flirting with boys already? It was really cute.

The last "first" of the week was Rita's first pedicure. I have pictures and maybe will post them later this weekend. It was so fun to see her giggling and smiling at the attention - she loved it and everyone at the salon thought she was darling. I think her pretty toes lasted for 30 minutes total. 29 minutes in the salon while I was finishing up (and one million "be careful"s and "don't touch"); and the last one minute as we were pulling out of the parking lot. At the first stop light, I turned around and she had totally smudged off her big toe. She was sooo disappointed with herself. I wanted so bad to turn around and have the girls fix it (and they would have) but it was one of those lessons she needed to learn.
We tried to fix it again today at home but the same thing happened --- she just can't wait for her toes to dry before she wants to touch them. And then she cries when they get messed up. She wants to try again tomorrow.
*We have a really cool YMCA very close to our home. During the summer and school breaks they have a huge variety of sports and arts & crafts camps that run weekly. In addition to tennis camp, we are thinking about enrolling her in dance camp, and either soccer & swimming or a ceramics day camp. We are only going to pick 2 or 3 options so she has some variety but not too much change each week.

Love the tennis outfit! So cute.

Yay for pedicures. Kristen and I get them together in the summer, but I've not tried Katya yet. I KNOW she'll smudge it and it will be a total waste of money!

Katya still will not eat peanut butter, although she's otherwise not picky at all. I don't think they have anything like peanut butter in Russia.

Slugger goes to a community center for camp in the summer. It's great for him -- really structured but really, really active. Last year he took rock climbing, swimming, xtreme sports, and mountain biking. He loved them all but biking was the clear favorite.

I think Rita would really enjoy the sports camps!

The arena soccer at the Y is great. Both Nicole and Nathan are doing it. During the school year, it is on Saturdays, with no practices, and only one hour total. There is another session starting up in April.

My kids have grown to love all the American favorites: Hamburger is the all-time favorite now. They used to hate any type of sandwich. They still love some old favorites from Russia: Pickles, pickled herring, yogurt, any kind of fish, etc.

Rita looks great in her tennis gear!

It just sounds like normal life...and that's amazing! If she starts school Monday, don't forget to have her wear green. I'd hate to have her first day be filled with pinches!

I think Rita is looking bigger and healthier already. You may not notice it as you see her everyday, but this round of pictures looks a little different than the rest. She sounds like a true joy to have in your lives. Such enthusiasm for life!

I just wanted to wish you both lots of luck and love with your new little girl.

We lived in the same neighborhood as Michael when he was a boy and I watched him and his siblings grow up. So many good memories or family times and neighborhood events.

I think tennis is such a great sport for girls. Keeps them moving and burning off energy, too. ;)

Sounds like you are doing all kinds of fun girlie things! She looks adorable in the tennis outfit.

Love the blog! Very encouraging to read about life post-adoption...we're anxiously waiting for our first trip to Magadan. I agree with the previous poster...Rita looks more vibrant in these pictures (though she's always been a cutie!); it is obvious that her life with you has been good for her.
Tell her she's got a family down in Louisiana thinking of her as she begins her school journey and praying for her successful surgery!
