One Cat That Likes Me

Rita with Kristin's cat Pocus. On Sunday, we went over to Kristin's condo in La Jolla for lunch and to swim in her heated swimming pool and hot tub. I love these photos (Pocus is such a good sport) because our cat Yoshi won't let Rita within five feet of her! (She's warming up though...)

Rita loves to turn up the iPod speakers and sing & dance in the family room. One of her favorite songs is "Let's Get It Started" by the Black Eyed Peas. This picture was taken on Sunday before Z came over.

Just before bedtime on Sunday, one of Rita's front teeth came out! (The other front tooth is loose as well.) Rita had her two bottom teeth come out when she was living with her foster parents last summer. In Russia, she told us (via Z) that the tooth fairy was a mouse and that they placed her teeth in the oven (?). So tonight we placed her tooth in an envelope (with her name and a picture of a mouse on it) and put it on the bottom shelf of her nightstand so it was easy for the mouse to find it. (I don't think she liked the idea of a mouse coming into her bed under the pillow.)
When I woke Rita up for school this morning she immediately jumped off her bed and looked at the envelope. She was confused that it was still there but super surprised to find that the tooth mouse left $1!
And strangely, Yoshi - the cat who never comes close to Rita - was watching from the doorway... I guess she was hanging around trying to get a glimpse of the tooth mouse.

I'm so glad she knew about the mouse tradition. When Vladimir was here he lost three teeth. I called the agency to see if my coordinator (from the Ukraine) knew what the Russian tradition was. She told me about the mouse, but Vlad didn't seem to know anything about that. He just wanted to throw the teeth in the garbage. He thought it was so weird that I wanted to take a picture and that I saved the teeth in an envelope. I'm glad someone has followed those traditions with Rita (and that you're continuing it).

I had never heard of the tooth mouse tradition! I would have thought she was making it up! Apparently they did not do that with Katya. She lost most of her teeth very early (in Russia). At just eight, she has almost all of her permanent teeth already.

When I first saw the top pictures, I thought for a sec. that you had let Rita get her own new cat!

Can't wait to see Rita missing her two front teeth! I always think that is so cute! Lilly is just getting her teeth- her first big molars just came in!
And our cat Oliver won't let Lilly anywhere near him either...maybe he will warm up eventually but Lilly always lights up whenever she seems him...even across the room!

Yep. It's a mouse. I'll verify the oven part of the story with my two Russian childhood experts (Anton & Liza in my second grade class) and get back to you. That's part they haven't told me...

Adorable cat, adorable girl! Very sweet pictures. Too bad her own kitty won't let her hold him like that, but maybe in time?

Love the mouse story. I'm waiting for Kate to give the complete story so I can see if my girls remember it. Alena didn't actually loose any teeth while still in Russia, but she had a few pulled. Maybe she knew the tale, too.

I love the pics of Rita holding the cat. Yeah, my cats are also not tolerant of even being touched. They should form a club with Yoshi! :)

Anyway - the story about the tooth mouse is pretty cool - I am also looking forward to what Kate says about the oven!

Wait, I didn't even know that Bernard had a kitty brother. Way to go Pocus! Too cute, too sweet. Yoshi might come around one of these days.

Love the tooth story. It's so much magic.
