Surprise Party
Last night we had a very normal night as a family of three. And for a family with a newly adopted child, you know just how amazing that feels.

Our neighbors invited us over for a surprise birthday party. Most of the other neighbors we know were over there too. This time ... WE actually had a child to bring! It was so adorable how Rita was following the girls around, jumping on the trampoline with them, and chasing the boys (a little bit). Until she saw the ball they were playing with - by the pool - and she couldn't resist and played with them instead. (She can be a bit of a tomboy.)

Then all of the kids went out front and played hide and go seek. A couple of the older girls (9 and 10) "mentored" Rita and they ran around for a good hour. She giggled and giggled and giggled when she ran to hide and then ran back to safety. Then the girls came in and camped out on the floor of the den and watched "The Little Mermaid" and ate popcorn.

It was so cool seeing her just hang out with other children and interact and have a blast. I couldn't help saying to Michael, "I wonder how she will look back at this time?" I can't think of a greater contrast than going from the Children's Home in Russia to a backyard birthday party with dance music, party food & drinks, palm trees and beautiful sunset.

This summer is going to be great!

I know with my daughter's two children that she adopted from Russia, I often find myself watching them and thinking how different their lives are now. And wondering if they realize it and how they'll remember these years. It's such a wonderful time.
