Sweet and Bittersweet Moments

I haven't been writing much, or taking many photos. I definitely have to get into the groove again.

Popular phrases of the moment:

"Wait for me!" (When walking the dog.)

"That is my favorite!" (Apparently everything is her favorite right now.)

"I love you so much!" (Not sure where "so much" came from but we love this one.)

I've also noticed the last two weeks (when the TV isn't on) that Rita sings when folding her laundry. These are made up songs with endearing lyrics ...

Last week's song ... "My mama's name is Sue-sha*. My papa's name is Michael. I love my mama. I love my papa." (Tried to get this on video but she caught me.)
This week's song ... "My mama likes me. My mama likes me." (Sang over and over mixed with non-recognizable lyrics.)

Also last night at the dinner table, out of the blue Rita says "I miss Babushka Irina" (her foster mom / caregiver's sister). I asked her if she wanted to make her a card and we could send it to her. She liked that idea.

I also told Rita that I have sent two letters with a lot of pictures to Babushka Irina and Tatiana. She didn't know this (or remember) and her face lit up. (I sent them with families who were traveling to our orphanage in April and May.) I said that I told Irina and Tatiana that she was doing well in America and was happy. We then looked at pictures of them, our trips to Russia, and she was fine with everything again.

We are having more and more closer interactions but many of them are also bittersweet. We haven't heard from Tatiana and Irina but I think it's because they respect our new family and/or they don't speak english.
I am finding it amazing how our relationship continues to grow.

*Rita has a hard time pronouncing my name and this is what usually comes out.

That's good that she told you. I'm glad you're keeping those old connections alive.

Her songs are so cute! Better than Slugger's favorite (I Like Big Butts -- thank you foster dad).

So glad you can stay in contact with her foster/caregivers. I wish we had that opportunity. I do send books recapping our year though to the SWI. Love the songs and her reaffirmation of what she knows about your love!!

this is a lovely post, what it must do inside your heart to see her bonding with you and having a healthy attachment to her past too. i love how you channeled it for her into a letter/card.

What a great post! You handled her past life and are blending it into her new one so wonderfully. I know it isn't easy but it will make Rita more self confident as she continues to bond and attach.

I can see so many changes in Rita since the Moscow airport. She looks so incredibly happy with you both.

P.S. I talked to my husband about hosting a high school student in about a year. I thought it was a great idea and we do it at a later date!

The songs she sings sound so sweet (music to your ears).

I'm so excited to hear about your exchange student. What a wonderful idea and connection to Russia for Rita. This will also provide a connection back in Russia once the student returns home. Someone to possibly visit at a later date. How fun and exciting!

The songs are so sweet.
Nice to hear that you keep in contact with her caregivers. Obviously she still thinks of them and I'm sure that she appreciates that you do as well.

What fun little songs. ;>

Shoo-sha is the sweet name for Ksenia. Maybe she thinks that's your real name!

Checking in on your blog. So glad to read the "dailies" on Rita and her transition into your family. Your blog has encouraged me during our wait--we leave this Sunday for Trip 2 to bring home our siblings--D & D--ages 4 & 6. Thanks again and happy life! Michelle
