So She Voted No On Prop 8...
A couple of funny stories from the last few weeks...
  • On the way to the pumpkin patch, Katy Pery's "I Kissed @ Girl" song came on and Rita said, "Is this a girl or boy singing?". We said it was a girl. Her facial reaction was very funny - she was totally confused. And then she asked why would a girl want to kiss another girl? I think I said something about how they were just joking around and it's nice to kiss and hug other people.
  • Rita has been interested about babies again. She asks me if I have (or had) a baby in my stomach. (Reason #567 for exercising.) I tell her that I don't/didn't want a baby in my stomach ... that we wanted to find a little girl in Russia to be our daughter and be part of our family. Rita also asks about our wedding, and she knows that she was four years old when we got married. She asks why we didn't know her when she was a baby, or when she was four years old. I told her that we had to get married before we could go to find her in Russia.
  • Rita also asks about how a baby comes out during childbirth. She thought it was through the belly button. So I explained to her that there are three holes "down there" and explained the function of each ("one for pee, one for poo, and one for babies"). She wanted to check things out for herself because she didn't think she had one for a baby. I told her to hold off on the probing and that I would show her a picture (cartoon) on the internet the next day. She didn't remember the next day, but it did come up again late last week. So we had a brief anatomy session.

Luckily she hasn't asked about how the baby gets there in the first place!

She is such a little inquisitive thing! It's so great you're able to have open conversations with her, though.

The Katy Perry bit cracks me up! :)

Don't you just love those questions? You did a good job of handling them!

Slugger wouldn't talk to me about stuff when he first moved in. But I've tried really hard to forge that type of relationship between us. Over the past few months I've noticed that he's gotten to be completely comfortable talking to me and has asked me some real zingers.

I'm so not ready for these conversations. Glad to have families give us advice before we get to that stage.

My girls have asked about how the baby comes out of the mama and I've been honest with them. Both of them are convinced that I made the right decision by going to Russia to adopt because neither of them ever wants to have a baby if it has to come out THAT WAY! Ewww. ;) (Honestly, I can't really disagree with them!)

Thankfully neither has asked how the baby gets IN there in the first place! Not looking forward to THAT conversation, but I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

OMG. Too funny. During the second presidential debate, we were driving home from gymnastics, and I had told the girls how much I wanted to listen to the two men who wanted to be president on the radio. After about three minutes, Sasha said, "Momma, I was to talk about my peeschka." (Still our kid Russian work for parts "down there.") One way to get mom's attention away from the debate! Like Rita, when I went to explain and identify the various body parts at bathtime, she had lost interest.

Funny about the Katy Perry song: one of my kids said nearly the same thing! (I can't remember which one now, but somebody, asked, "Is this a girl? Why is she singing a boy's song?"

Katya asks birds-and-bees questions all the time, but it's tricky to know how much to tell here. Primarily, because I'm worried about how it will sound when she repeats it all over school! lol. (Seems she has no filter at times!)

Hard questions for a Mom to answer. ;) That's funny! Tell Thani that my Mom likes to watch that same show and I also cuddle and keep her warm. :)

Oh my goodness. I am not quite ready for those conversations yet! I am glad you can be so open and honest with her! That will hopefully lead to a great relationship where she won't be scared to share things with you. You are an amazing mom! So great to finally see you.

Rita is definitely thinking about her life and the connections. I loved meeting Rita. She is a free spirit but very thoughtful, too. You do have a way with explaining things. Good job, Mom! What a great weekend seeing you and Kristin, too. I bet Michael was anxious to see and hear about your adventures.

Rita certainly is inquisitive! I like the way you handled her questions. Vika's asked me very similar things, and I always try to answer as honestly as possible.

I did have to defer the "How does the Papa put the baby in the Mama's stomach?" question though. I couldn't think of an appropriate way to explain that to a 6 year old!

It's coming!! The twins understand the whole conception thing but they haven't asked about how the two parts mix. I think they must think that the doctor puts them together in the petri dish and then puts them in the mother (ha). Other babies just naturally come from other countries.

But really, one night they did ask me HOW does the, uh.... whatever get there and then... the phone rang and they forgot they asked!!! Whew!

While I don't want to be dishonest or evasive, I just don't think they need to know this at 7. Perhaps if we lived on a farm it naturally wouldn't be a big deal... but we don't.

You did a great job. I'm finding myself amazed how early kids ask questions and grow up.

i'm jealous you're going to the ridgeback event with Thani!!! I'd love to but am housesitting and bringing home the family from the airport next weekend - too much to do!

do you know lori from ridgeback rescue? she's the one that sent me the event flier! i'd love to meet her too - she's currently fostering Butch who is a big bulky guy like Boomer was and is doing an awesome job trimming him up!

Hi Thani, so cool that you get to go to a Ridgeback event with your Mom! (Mom read Mum of Critters comment) ;) Wish they had Ridgeback events close to me. Will there be lots of RR's there?
